New species of orange Discovered: BSI
A team of researchers from the botanical survey of India (BSI) have recently discovered a new Gin Berry species from the Kanyakumari wildlife sanctuary in tamilnadu.
The fruit of this species looks like an egg attached with stems . The species Glycosmis albicarpa with a distinct range white fruit is edemic to the southern Western Ghats.The species belongs to the orange family rutaceae.
This discovery has been published in the latest issue of Nordic journal of Botany published from Sweden .
Use of this plant ....
Man of the related plants of these taxonomic groups are utilised for their medicinal values and food commonly related species are collected from the wild mainly for local use as food and medicine.
Characteristics features
Word gin means a strong colourless alcoholic drink. Bervives of the Glycosmis species name the unique characteristics of gin aroma and gained in popularity as an edible fruit. According to K. A. Sujana, the leader of the scientific team , The species is also a larval like other species of Glycosmis .
Location and Distribution
The species an evergreen small tree was found as undergrowth in the Tirunelveli semievergreen forests at the Panagudi forest section of the wild life Santuary as a single population that covers an area of approximately 2 sq. Km said Dr. Sujana
While exploring the study site , four subpopulations of the species were located in the valley between two hillocks with each having three seven mature individuals in groups , she said. Though flowering natural regeneration and seedling recruitment of this taxon is found to be fairly good within the location causes a major threat to tne survival of this species she added.
A conservation effort for this particular region is the need of the hour added by Dr. Sujana.
The discovery adds to the growing inventtory of the " regions flora , said Ragesh gopala vadhyar , co_author.
